Chapter 16

Emily moved back into my house.

Her childhood room.

New locks she controlled.

A phone beside the bed.

No one entered without knocking.

Simple things.

Huge things.

Ryan had trained her to ask permission for water.

The first night, she stood in my kitchen at two in the morning.

“Daddy?”

I looked up from coffee.

“Can I have milk?”

I stared at her.

She immediately looked embarrassed.

“Sorry.”

“No.”

I stood.

“Don’t apologize.”

“I woke you.”

“I was awake.”

She opened the refrigerator.

Then stopped.

“Can I—”

“Yes.”

She laughed nervously.

“I know.”

But she didn’t.

Not yet.

Freedom takes practice after control.

Three weeks later, the bruises faded.

The baby remained healthy.

Emily slept longer.

She still checked doors twice.

Still flinched when men raised their voices downstairs.

Still hid food beside her bed one night.

I found crackers in the drawer.

Said nothing.

The next morning, she brought them to the kitchen herself.

“I don’t need these.”

“No.”

She smiled.

“Still keeping one.”

“Fine.”

Healing did not need perfection.

Linda lost every channel she had into the Bennett organization.

Paul lost his command.

Ryan lost access to Emily.

None of them were allowed near her unless she chose it.

She didn’t.

One afternoon, I found the pink teddy bear on the nursery chair.

The same bear Linda had thrown at me.

Emily had cleaned it.

“Keeping it?”

She nodded.

“For her.”

She touched her stomach.

“Does that feel strange?”

“A little.”

“Then throw it away.”

“No.”

She smiled.

“I want something from that night to belong to me.”

Good.

Her decision.

Later she asked:

“Were you really going to leave after giving me the gift?”

“Yes.”

She looked down.

“If you had…”

I knew.

“I didn’t.”

“But if—”

“Emily.”

She looked at me.

“You asked me not to leave.”

Tears appeared.

“So I didn’t.”

That was all.

Ryan had told her nobody was coming.

He was wrong.

Sometimes rescue is not power.

Sometimes it is simply believing the person who finally asks.
