Chapter 11

Paul called before dawn.
Not me.
Linda.
My men had her phone mirrored.
We listened.
“Is James still there?”
Linda looked at me.
I nodded.
She answered:
“Yes.”
Paul exhaled.
“Then move him to the back room.”
Ryan stared.
“What?”
Paul continued.
“Vale’s team is twelve minutes out.”
Marcus went white.
“You said tomorrow.”
Paul:
“Plan changed.”
Linda looked at Marcus.
He shook his head.
“No.”
For once, everyone in the room understood at the same time.
Vale wasn’t coming to rescue them.
He was coming to erase the failed operation.
Linda’s voice changed.
“What about Ryan?”
Paul paused.
“Unnecessary.”
Ryan stopped breathing.
“What about me?”
Another pause.
“Same.”
Linda’s face emptied.
Paul continued:
“Emily stays alive.”
My hand tightened.
“Baby?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Leverage.”
Emily covered her stomach.
No one had mentioned me.
I was assumed dead.
Linda whispered:
“You promised—”
Paul cut her off.
“Vale promises what people need to hear.”
Call ended.
Silence.
Marcus laughed.
Not because anything was funny.
Because fear had nowhere else to go.
Ryan stared at his mother.
“You knew they wanted the baby.”
“No.”
“You knew.”
“I knew leverage mattered.”
He looked sick.
“And you still—”
Linda snapped:
“Don’t judge me. You enjoyed every advantage.”
Ryan recoiled.
I watched.
No sympathy.
But understanding.
Violence travels downhill until someone stops it.
Linda received old humiliation.
Fed it to Ryan.
Ryan fed it to Emily.
Both planned to pass control through a child not yet born.
I stood.
“Emily.”
She looked at me.
“You’re leaving.”
Her face filled with panic.
“Without you?”
“No.”
I held out my hand.
“With me.”
Ryan stepped forward.
“She stays.”
Every guard moved.
He stopped.
“She’s my wife.”
Emily looked at him.
“No.”
Again.
Stronger.
Ryan’s eyes hardened.
“After everything I’ve done for you?”
She stared at the bruises on her arms.
Then at him.
“That sentence is why I’m leaving.”
Outside, engines approached.
Vale’s cleanup team had arrived.

And for the first time that night, Ryan looked toward me not as an enemy—
but as the only man standing between him and the people his mother trusted.
