Chapter 5 - Daniel starts building a case after the answer

After the fusion-center confirmation, Daniel searched me six more times.

That was what changed the investigation.

Before:

Misuse of database.

Bad judgment.

Maybe obsession.

After:

He knew the central allegation was false.

Yet he continued trying to manufacture support.

He photographed my temporary duty orders while I showered.

Metadata placed the images on his phone.

He photographed my receipts.

My secure-phone charging case.

A small government property tag.

Then he emailed photographs to a retired deputy named Gordon Shaw, who now ran a private investigations firm.

Daniel:

Tell me what looks fake.

Gordon:

Nothing obviously fake. Orders look normal from what I can see.

Daniel:

Rank line wrong?

Gordon:

No idea. You already said liaison verified her. What are you doing?

Daniel did not answer.

Then another text.

To Tyler.

Your sister’s playing games again. Keep your phone handy when she starts talking federal.

Tyler:

What games?

Daniel:

You’ll see.

Then Emma.

Daniel told her:

“Carla may be in trouble.”

“What kind?”

“Impersonation.”

Emma laughed.

Daniel became angry.

“She has a secret phone in your house.”

“It’s work.”

“You don’t know that.”

“Daniel, she’s a general.”

“You know because she told you.”

Emma showed him a photograph from my promotion ceremony.

Army insignia.

Commanding general beside me.

Official stage.

Daniel said:

“Photos prove nothing anymore.”

That line would become almost absurd later.

At the time it frightened Emma enough that she stopped arguing.

Then the morning of the assault.

Daniel went to work.

He texted Tyler at 8:06:

Be home by four. I may need a witness.

Tyler:

For what?

Daniel:

Official business.

He told Emma:

“If Carla starts another secure call in the kitchen, don’t touch anything.”

Emma asked:

“Why?”

“I may have to seize the device.”

Under what warrant?

None.

Under what case?

None.

He was not assigned to any investigation involving me.

Then he brought home:

His service weapon.

Handcuffs.

Uniform.

All ordinary for a sheriff after work.

But he also brought a blank property-evidence bag.

That was found in his patrol vehicle.

Could be normal equipment.

Yes.

Then Tyler’s video.

The first thirty seconds began before Daniel entered.

Tyler whispered:

“Mom, this feels wrong.”

Emma:

“I know.”

Then I entered from the hallway already on the secure phone.

Daniel came through the front door.

Everything in the supplied video happened.

The question was no longer:

Did Daniel think I was fake?

May you like

It was:

Why did a man who had been told I was real need to prove I was fake anyway?
