Chapter 7 - Tyler’s eleven-minute video

Tyler’s video started because Daniel told him to record.
It ended because Tyler forgot to stop.
Eleven minutes and twenty-eight seconds.
The first half showed the attack.
The second showed the black SUVs arriving, protective officers entering, Daniel being disarmed, and Emma saying:
“Oh God, Daniel, what did you do?”
The most useful part came before Daniel crossed the kitchen.
Tyler had been sitting at the chipped table.
Emma stood near the coffee maker.
Daniel waited in the entry hall.
His voice could be heard.
“Keep the camera on her.”
Tyler:
“Why?”
“If she reaches for that phone, get it.”
“What?”
“Just record.”
Then Emma:
“Daniel, you said the state confirmed her.”
Silence.
Daniel:
“They confirmed a name.”
Emma:
“They confirmed Carla.”
Daniel:
“You don’t understand verification.”
Emma:
“Neither do you.”
I had never heard my mother say that to him.
Then Daniel entered.
The confrontation began.
Later, after the chair fell, Tyler shouted:
“Dad, stop!”
Daniel pointed at him with his free hand.
“Stay back.”
Not the gun.
Important.
Then the secure response team arrived.
Daniel’s gun fell.
Protective officer:
“Step away.”
Daniel:
“She’s impersonating a federal officer.”
Officer:
“Major General Mitchell is under our protection.”
Daniel’s face.
Tyler’s camera caught it.
Not realization from zero.
Recognition that his story would no longer survive.
Then Daniel looked directly at Tyler’s phone.
“Turn that off.”
Tyler did not.
“Tyler.”
“No.”
That no mattered.
His whole childhood, Tyler had been the son who avoided conflict.
He finally chose evidence over peace.
Daniel stepped toward him.
Protective officer blocked the movement.
No struggle.
Then Emma:
“Give me your badge.”
Daniel looked at her.
“What?”
“Give me your badge.”
She had no legal authority to take it.
She knew.
It was not a command.
May you like
It was a wife asking whether her husband understood what he had just become.
He did not answer.
