Chapter 17

Seven years after the engagement dinner, we held another formal dinner beneath the same chandeliers.

Oliver was nine.

No Camille.

No Adrian.

Nora sat beside me.

Not as maid.

Not as replacement mother.

As Nora.

My partner.

Oliver still called her that.

He walked into the room carrying dessert plates because he insisted on helping.

Then dropped one.

Cake landed on the carpet.

Every adult looked.

Oliver looked at me.

Then Nora.

“Oops.”

That was it.

No one shouted.

No one questioned belonging.

No one locked a door.

A server cleaned it.

Dinner continued.

Later Oliver leaned against Nora’s shoulder while talking.

Not hiding.

Just comfortable.

I watched him.

Years earlier he had clung to her neck at my engagement dinner because he was afraid she would be taken away.

I mistook the moment for attachment.

It was survival.

Then he told me:

“Daddy, don’t let her lock us in.”

Six words.

Enough to expose nine nights.

Enough to reveal the Sterling plan.

Enough to force me to examine the house I thought I controlled.

I used to believe being head of Whitmore meant knowing what happened under my roof.

It didn’t.

Power gave me reports.

Fear gave people reasons to edit them.

Oliver taught me to watch where a child reaches when frightened.

That direction often tells the truth before anyone speaks.

He reached toward Nora then.

Still.

But now without panic.

She handed him another dessert plate.

He looked at me.

“Can I have two?”

“No.”

Nora said:

“Yes.”

I stared at her.

She smiled.

Terrible discipline.

Excellent life.

Oliver laughed.

The chandeliers glowed above us.

Every door in the west hallway stood open.

Not as a symbol for guests.

May you like

Because no one needed them locked anymore.

That was enough.
