Chapter 6

Adrian returned the token.

Not voluntarily.

Three Sterling elders refused to stand behind him after seeing Elise’s letter.

That mattered.

History only works as leverage while enough people accept the edited version.

The token was small.

Silver.

Whitmore crest on one side.

Sterling emblem on the other.

Ugly thing.

Elise had kept it hidden for years.

Not because she valued it.

Because she understood what powerful families do with missing context.

I put it beside her letter.

Camille stared at both.

“My father told me Elise wanted the alliance.”

“He lied.”

She cried.

Adrian snapped:

“He interpreted.”

I almost laughed.

“No.”

I looked at him.

“He lied.”

Words deserve accuracy.

Richard Sterling had built a fantasy around a woman’s refusal.

Then passed it to his children as inherited opportunity.

Adrian embraced it.

Camille used it to rationalize insecurity.

And Oliver paid.

I stripped Adrian of all access to Whitmore business.

No meetings.

No properties.

No private contact through Camille.

He called me emotional.

Maybe.

A father discovering his child had been locked away tends to become emotional.

I survived.

Then I turned to Camille.

The engagement was over.

She knew before I spoke.

Tears.

No begging.

Good.

“What about Oliver?”

“No.”

Immediate.

Her face broke.

“Damian.”

“No unsupervised contact.”

“I love him.”

I believed her.

That did not change anything.

“You taught him that closing a door means you disappear.”

She covered her face.

“I didn’t think—”

“That’s the problem.”

No cruelty.

No shouting.

Just consequence.

Then Nora appeared at the doorway with Oliver.

He saw Camille.

His body tightened.

That answered more than any adult argument.

Camille noticed.

She stepped backward herself.

For the first time, she put his fear ahead of her need to repair her image.

Too late for marriage.

Maybe not too late for becoming better.
