The truth came through lawyers, court filings, access records, and Dominic’s eventual cooperation.
Not through a confession.
Helena Bellini had been the source.
For nearly eight months, Matteo’s mother had been selectively providing federal investigators with Bellini financial and operational records.
She had not suddenly turned against organized crime.
She had not decided the truth mattered more than family.
She was using the investigation.
Helena knew Matteo had been steadily pulling legitimate assets away from traditional Bellini operations.
He had reduced Dominic’s authority in several businesses.
He had begun discussing selling the Lake Forest estate before Ava reached school age.
And more than once, he had told Helena that his daughter would not grow up treating the Bellini organization as an inheritance.
To Helena, that was not reform.
It was extinction.
She believed Matteo was dismantling what generations of Bellinis had built.
So she created a controlled succession.
First, she gave investigators enough genuine information to intensify their case against Matteo.
She carefully avoided records that would expose Dominic as heavily as they exposed Matteo.
Then she told Dominic the indictment was inevitable.
She persuaded him to prepare as successor.
At the same time, she built a custody file.
Dominic would become temporary guardian.
Ava would remain in the Bellini household.
The family organization would continue under Dominic.
Matteo would still be alive, still protected by family attorneys, but removed from daily control.
Helena convinced herself this was more humane than allowing an internal power struggle after Matteo voluntarily walked away.
And the “Daddy Dominic” rehearsals had a precise purpose.
If a family court saw a child already treating Dominic as a parental figure, Helena believed the guardianship transition would look less disruptive.
That was why the word mattered.
That was why she reacted with violence when Ava exposed it.
And the clues had been there.
The child-development consultant hired months before any supposed indictment.
The forged school form naming Dominic if Matteo were detained.
The behavioral file documenting Matteo as an unstable parent.
Helena’s statement that she had “made sure they have enough.”
Matteo’s disappearance had never meant death.
His mother planned to use the legal system to remove him from his own family.
Dominic sat across from Matteo in Rebecca Sloan’s conference room after learning the full scope.
His face was gray.
“She told me the government already had everything.”
Matteo stared at him.
“You still agreed to take my daughter.”
“Yes.”
“You still let Ava call you Dad.”
Dominic swallowed.
“Yes.”
“You wanted the chair.”
Dominic looked down.
After a long silence, he answered.
“Part of me did.”
Matteo nodded.
That mattered.
