Chapter 8
Matteo made the decision the next morning.
By noon, every senior Bellini figure knew.
Dominic was suspended from all family authority.
Helena lost access to the estate, business offices, family accounts she did not personally own, and any decision involving Ava.
Matteo removed both names from emergency-contact lists.
Then he did something the older capos considered far worse.
He placed Bellini’s legitimate companies under temporary independent management while outside counsel preserved corporate records.
No documents were to be destroyed.
No books altered.
No employee pressured.
No one was permitted to contact investigators on his behalf.
Matteo also moved Ava out of the estate.
Not because he feared an attack that night.
Because the estate itself had become part of the problem.
Too many adults.
Too much hierarchy.
Too many people trained to obey the person with the strongest family title.
Ava went with her nanny and Matteo to a secured private residence unconnected to Bellini operations.
The family reacted badly.
One capo accused Matteo of dismantling decades of authority over “domestic drama.”
Matteo removed him from the meeting.
Another warned that Dominic’s suspension would create instability.
“Then let it,” Matteo said.
“What if rivals see weakness?”
“They already did.”
Matteo looked around the table.
“My mother forged documents involving my child inside my own house while everyone was too respectful to ask a question. Don’t explain weakness to me.”
Dominic did not fight the suspension.
That surprised several people.
Before leaving, he removed the Bellini ring from his hand and placed it on the conference table.
Matteo looked at it.
“I didn’t ask for that.”
“I know.”
Dominic pushed it toward him.
“I shouldn’t wear it while you decide whether I used the family or the family used me.”
The gesture did not earn forgiveness.
It did mark a change.
By that evening, three senior relatives had chosen Helena’s side.
Two supported Dominic.
Several blamed Matteo.
The Bellini structure began cracking.
Matteo could have stopped it by reversing himself.
