Chapter 13

Matteo eventually faced Helena in a supervised attorney conference.
She looked older.
Not defeated.
Helena Bellini did not know how to appear defeated.
“You are destroying everything your father built.”
Matteo sat across from her.
“You tried to have me removed from my daughter.”
“I tried to make sure she stayed with family.”
“She already was with family.”
“You were going to take her away.”
“To school.”
“To a different life.”
“Yes.”
Helena leaned forward.
“You think that makes you better than us?”
“No.”
Matteo’s answer seemed to surprise her.
“I think it gives Ava a chance to be better than all of us.”
Helena’s eyes filled with anger.
“I kept this family alive.”
“You kept the structure alive.”
“There is no difference.”
“There is to a three-year-old.”
Helena looked away.
Then she finally explained the part Matteo already understood.
She had watched cousins go to prison.
Watched relatives die.
Watched businesses collapse whenever leadership weakened.
When Matteo began distancing legitimate companies from the organization, Helena became convinced he would leave a vacuum.
She believed Dominic could keep the family stable.
She believed Ava needed to remain inside that stability.
And she believed Matteo would never voluntarily surrender enough control for transition to happen peacefully.
“So you created the crisis,” Matteo said.
“I controlled the crisis.”
“No.”
His voice remained calm.
“You controlled people until Ava said one sentence you couldn’t control.”
Helena’s expression changed.
Matteo continued.
“You hit her because a three-year-old told the truth before your lawyers were ready for it.”
Helena had no answer.

For the first time in Matteo’s life, his mother’s silence did not feel powerful.
It felt empty.
