Chapter 14

Owen’s first supervised visit with Conrad lasted thirty minutes.

Domenico was not there.

He did not belong there.

Claire waited outside with the family therapist.

Conrad sat at a small table while Owen entered carrying nothing in his hands.

No football.

No toy.

Nothing that could become an argument over ownership.

For several minutes, neither spoke.

Then Conrad said:

“I’m sorry.”

Owen looked at the therapist.

She nodded slightly.

He could answer or not.

“Grandma said sorry too?”

Conrad swallowed.

“I don’t know.”

“Are you still scared of her?”

Conrad looked down.

That question reached somewhere no prosecutor had.

“Yes.”

Owen stared at him.

“You’re big.”

Conrad almost smiled.

Then stopped because the boy was not joking.

“I know.”

Owen’s face tightened.

“Then why didn’t you help me?”

Conrad’s eyes filled.

There was no acceptable answer.

He finally said:

“I should have.”

Owen waited.

Conrad did not add excuses.

No childhood story.

No explanation about Miriam.

No speech about family.

Just:

“I should have.”

The visit ended without a hug.

Afterward, the therapist told Claire that was not failure.

Trust did not return because an adult finally said the correct sentence.

It returned, if it returned at all, through repeated safe behavior.

Domenico understood that lesson too.

He no longer pushed Eli toward relatives merely because they shared blood.

The boy chose who he approached.

Who he hugged.

Who he played with.

That summer, the backyard flower bed was replanted.

Not because Domenico wanted to erase the place where Conrad threatened Eli.

The gardeners simply needed to replace plants damaged during a storm.

When they asked whether he wanted the stone border removed, Domenico said no.

May you like

It was just a flower bed.

He refused to let one violent moment turn every ordinary thing into a monument.
