Chapter 8

The irreversible decision came the following morning.

Grace placed three options in front of Domenico.

He could remain a reporting witness and protect his own household from deeper scrutiny.

He could provide only the backyard footage and staff statements directly related to Eli.

Or he could authorize investigators to review the broader Ravello estate records involving Miriam’s authority over children, including security footage, staffing logs, internal communications, guest-room access, and family-event schedules.

The third option would expose far more than a child-welfare matter.

The Ravello estate had hosted people Domenico did not want government investigators cataloging.

Some had criminal histories.

Some were active family associates.

Some conversations had nothing to do with children and everything to do with a world built on privacy.

Grace was blunt.

“Once you open that archive, you do not control where lawful subpoenas lead.”

Domenico looked at her.

“If I don’t?”

“Then investigators work with less.”

He thought about the steel rod.

Owen asking whether Miriam was home.

The storage room.

The messages about Eli repeating everything.

For his entire adult life Domenico had been taught that family secrets were protected because outsiders could weaponize them.

Now the secrecy itself was protecting the adults who had frightened two children.

“Give them access to everything relevant to the children.”

Grace held his gaze.

“That is not reversible.”

“I know.”

“And if they find unrelated criminal evidence?”

“We respond through counsel.”

She studied him.

“You’re sure?”

“No.”

Domenico signed anyway.

Within days, investigators received hundreds of hours of household footage and months of staffing records.

Several Ravello associates were furious.

One called Domenico weak.

Another called him reckless.

Miriam called him unforgivable.

He accepted all three opinions.

The archive produced something nobody expected.

Not a dramatic assault.

A pattern.

On six separate family weekends, footage showed Miriam taking an item belonging to Eli and placing it among Owen’s belongings.

Each time Owen later tried to return it.

Each time Conrad intervened.

Sometimes verbally.

Once by removing Owen from the room.

The football incident was not unique.

It was the sixth version of the same manufactured conflict.

Someone had been training both boys into a story.

Eli steals.

Owen owns.

Owen confirms.

Adults believe Owen.

And if Eli later said something uncomfortable about what happened around Owen, the household already had a reason to call him confused.
