Chapter 7

Then Owen disappeared from school for three consecutive days.
Conrad said he had taken his son to a family property in Wisconsin “to get away from the pressure.”
Grace immediately contacted the caseworker.
There was no court order preventing travel yet.
But the timing alarmed everyone.
Domenico wanted to send men north.
Grace stopped him.
“If you do that, you become the story.”
“He removed the boy after an investigation started.”
“Then let the agency and the court respond.”
“They move slowly.”
“Yes.”
Domenico stood.
Grace did not flinch.
“Your impatience is not a legal argument.”
He hated that sentence enough to remember it.
The agency sought an emergency hearing.
Conrad appeared remotely with counsel.
He insisted Owen was safe.
The judge ordered him to return the child to Illinois within twenty-four hours and make him available to the evaluator.
Conrad complied.
That surprised Domenico.
It also suggested Conrad was frightened, not fleeing permanently.
During the evaluation, Owen refused to discuss specific punishments.
But he said something that shifted the investigation.
“I made Eli get in trouble.”
The evaluator asked, “How?”
Owen stared at the carpet.
“With his stuff.”
“What stuff?”
“Toys.”
“Did Eli take your toys?”
Owen shook his head.
Then immediately looked scared.
The evaluator did not push.
Owen whispered:
“They said I had to say they were mine.”
That was enough to validate the manufactured ownership conflicts.
But not yet the reason.
When asked who “they” meant, Owen shut down completely.
Later that evening Conrad called Domenico despite Grace’s instructions.
Domenico answered once.
“What?”
Conrad sounded exhausted.
“You need to stop before you break him.”
Domenico’s voice became cold.
“He’s already breaking.”
“You don’t understand.”
“Then explain.”
Silence.
“Conrad.”
His cousin finally spoke.
“She thinks if he talks, everything gets worse.”
“Who?”
Conrad said nothing.
Domenico already knew.
“Miriam.”
May you like
The call disconnected.
It was the closest Conrad had come to admitting the real center of the problem.
