Chapter 11

Marco stared at his wife.
“What do you mean?”
Camilla looked exhausted now.
Not frightened.
Not furious.
Empty.
“For years, whenever I mentioned my father, you changed.”
Marco shook his head.
“No.”
“You stopped touching your watch.”
His hand instinctively moved toward it.
Camilla saw.
“So did I.”
A bitter smile appeared.
“I noticed everything.”
“Then why didn't you ask?”
“I did.”
Her voice hardened.
“You always gave me another reason to hate Domenico.”
She looked toward Domenico.
“His father accused mine.”
“His family kept the money.”
“His branch got everything.”
Then she turned back.
“And I believed you because believing you was easier than believing I married someone who knew.”
Marco's shoulders dropped.
Camilla continued.
“That part is mine.”
Domenico watched her carefully.
She was finally taking responsibility.
Not all of it.
Enough to matter.
Then Camilla looked toward the hallway where Livia had been taken earlier.
Her face changed again.
“I hit his daughter.”
Domenico's jaw tightened.
Camilla's voice broke.
“I saw that vase fall and all I could think was that everything from your side of this family gets protected while mine gets broken.”
Domenico stepped closer.
“You slapped a three-year-old because you were angry at dead men.”
Camilla shut her eyes.
“Yes.”
No excuse.
That mattered.
Then Marco spoke.
“If you're finished blaming me for every choice you've ever made—”
Camilla turned.
The old arrogance returned to his face.
That was his mistake.
“You think because I lied, you become innocent?”
He pointed toward Domenico.
“You think he didn't benefit from what happened?”
Domenico’s eyes narrowed.
Marco continued.
“Angelo cleared the stolen accounts after Enzo died. The family absorbed everything. Nobody reopened it publicly.”
Camilla looked toward Domenico.
Marco smiled faintly.
“There’s another reason Angelo kept the truth buried.”
Domenico felt the room shift.
“What reason?”
May you like
Marco’s gaze held his.
“Because exposing my father would have exposed yours too.”
