Chapter 3

The South Pier building was gone.

The storage records were not.

An old Valenti property manager kept archived rental ledgers in a warehouse outside Boston.

Locker Seventeen had been registered under a shell company Angelo used for sensitive family documents.

The access history contained three names.

Angelo Valenti.

Enzo Valenti.

Raffaele Valenti.

Domenico stared at the final name.

Marco stood several feet away.

Camilla had insisted on coming.

The moment she saw Raffaele’s signature, her hand rose to her mouth.

“My father told my mother nobody else knew.”

Marco responded too quickly.

“Apparently he was wrong.”

Camilla turned toward him.

Her eyes remained on his face.

“What did your father tell you?”

“Nothing.”

“Marco.”

He exhaled through his nose.

“Old men told stories.”

The property manager interrupted.

“There’s more.”

Locker Seventeen had not been emptied when Angelo died.

It had been emptied eleven years earlier.

Seven years after Angelo’s death.

The authorization card was still attached to the record.

Domenico took it.

MARCO VALENTI.

The room became silent.

Camilla stared at her husband.

Marco's hand slowly closed around his wristwatch.

A habit Domenico had seen for years whenever Marco needed time to think.

“You emptied it?”

Marco looked at the property manager.

Then Domenico.

“I was handling old storage consolidation.”

“Why that locker?”

“I don't remember.”

Camilla laughed once.

A broken sound.

“You remembered the building five minutes ago.”

Marco’s eyes flashed toward her.

“Don't start.”

That tone changed her.

Camilla stood straighter.

For years, Marco had probably spoken to her like that in private.

Not loudly.

With certainty.

As though the conversation ended when he decided it did.

Domenico placed the access card on the table.

“What was inside?”

Marco said nothing.

Domenico waited.

The silence stretched long enough for the property manager to look down.

Finally Marco said:

“Old ledgers.”

Camilla’s breathing caught.

“You saw them.”

“I saw boxes.”

“What did they say?”

“I didn't read them.”

Camilla stared at him.

Domenico did too.

Marco’s voice hardened.

“I was clearing dead storage. That's all.”

The property manager shifted uneasily.

“Mr. Valenti?”

Domenico looked over.

The man held another sheet.

“There was a disposal receipt.”

Marco went pale.

The property manager continued.

“Most materials were marked for shredding.”

He pointed to the final line.

“One box wasn't.”

Domenico read it.

TRANSFERRED — PRIVATE FAMILY ARCHIVE.

Marco had not destroyed all the evidence.

He had kept part of it.
