Chapter 12

Marco’s final weapon was not a lie.
That was what made it effective.
Angelo had learned Raffaele was stealing months before Enzo died.
Not enough to prove everything.
Enough to confront him.
Raffaele threatened to expose years of unauthorized cash movements Angelo had approved to fund private family operations outside normal accounting.
Not theft.
Still damaging.
Still potentially criminal.
Angelo hesitated.
That hesitation gave Raffaele time to frame Enzo.
After the warehouse fire, Angelo could have exposed Raffaele immediately.
Instead he investigated quietly.
Partly because he wanted certainty.
Partly because public truth would reveal his own misconduct.
Domenico read the old correspondence.
His father had not killed Enzo.
But pride and self-protection delayed justice.
Camilla watched Domenico read.
“You knew?”
“No.”
She studied his face.
For the first time, she seemed to believe him.
Domenico’s fingers tightened around the paper.
He had spent his entire adult life treating Angelo as the model of strength.
Now strength looked different.
His father had allowed an innocent man’s name to remain dirty because clearing it would also stain his own.
Marco saw the effect.
His confidence returned.
“There.”
His voice became almost triumphant.
“Now we're all dirty.”
Domenico slowly raised his eyes.
Marco’s smile weakened.
Domenico spoke quietly.
“No.”
A pause.
“We’re all responsible for different things.”
He placed the letters on the table.
“My father’s cowardice does not erase yours.”
Marco’s face hardened.
“And yours?”
Domenico looked toward the doorway.
Livia was not there.
Good.
“My responsibility begins with what I do now.”
He ordered every document preserved.
The museum foundation, family businesses and outside counsel would receive the appropriate records.
No private burning.
No hidden box.
No family rewrite.
Camilla looked stunned.
“You'll expose Angelo?”
“Yes.”
Her lips parted.
“Your own father?”
Domenico’s gaze did not move.
“He left me a letter asking me to finish what he was too weak to finish.”
Then Domenico turned toward Marco.
“And I’m going to start with the man who spent twenty-two years making sure nobody did.”
Marco’s confidence vanished.
May you like
But Camilla had one more question.
“What happens to me?”
