Chapter 14

The legal consequences arrived slowly.
That frustrated Raffaele.
Slow did not mean meaningless.
Vanessa entered a negotiated plea involving child endangerment-related conduct and accepted court-ordered counseling, probationary restrictions, and strict limits on unsupervised contact with either child.
Family court maintained Daniel’s primary custody of Mason.
Vanessa’s contact remained professionally supervised.
Raffaele’s divorce proceeded separately.
No Moretti money made the child-welfare findings disappear.
No capo called a judge.
No attorney was permitted to intimidate staff.
Raffaele made sure of it.
Lily continued therapy.
She stopped asking whether nice clothes could be taken away when she was “bad.”
That took months.
For a while, she refused to let anyone polish her shoes.
Raffaele began doing it himself.
Not because the shoes needed polishing.
Because Lily thought it was funny to sit on the bathroom counter and watch her intimidating father struggle with tiny patent-leather shoes.
One morning she asked, “You clean mine?”
“Yes.”
“You kneel.”
Raffaele looked down.
He was, technically, on one knee.
Lily giggled.
The sentence that had once sounded like a threat on the brunch terrace became something harmless.
He preferred it that way.
Mason improved too.
He stopped asking Daniel permission before taking ordinary snacks.
He began seeing his mother under supervision without being pressured to forgive her.
Sometimes the visits went well.
Sometimes he refused to talk afterward.
Adults allowed both.
Raffaele and Daniel developed an awkward cooperation.
They would never be friends.
They did not need to be.
They needed to stop making children navigate adult pride.
Several months later, Dr. Carter recommended a short supervised meeting between Lily and Mason.
Neither child was required to attend.
Both agreed.
The meeting would take place at Raffaele’s estate.
When Raffaele heard that, he looked toward the terrace.
The last time the children had stood there together, Lily was kneeling and Mason was terrified to move his feet.
He considered choosing another location.
Then decided against it.
May you like
The terrace belonged to them too.
Vanessa did not get to own the memory forever.
