Chapter 8

The temporary custody hearing lasted less than an hour.
Daniel received primary physical custody of Mason while the investigation continued.
Vanessa received supervised contact.
Raffaele did not oppose the order.
That decision cost him.
Not legally.
Personally.
Mason had lived in the Moretti estate for almost three years.
He had breakfast with Lily.
Built forts in the library.
Sat beside Raffaele during baseball games even when he barely understood the rules.
Raffaele could have fought to keep him in the household under some temporary arrangement.
He did not.
After court, Mason packed a blue suitcase.
Lily followed him from room to room.
“You coming back?”
Mason looked at Raffaele.
Raffaele said nothing.
This answer belonged to the boy.
“I can visit.”
“When?”
“I don’t know.”
Lily started crying.
Mason did too.
Raffaele turned away for a moment.
The easy choice would have been to promise something.
He refused.
Adults had already made enough promises around these children that depended on circumstances they controlled.
Before Daniel left, Raffaele gave him every school document, medical record, and therapy contact he had.
“No family people around him unless you approve.”
Daniel looked surprised.
“That includes you?”
“Yes.”
Daniel studied him.
Then nodded.
That afternoon, Raffaele made the second irreversible choice.
Through Claire, he made a formal child-welfare report concerning Vanessa’s treatment of both children.
He knew what that meant.
Outside investigators could inspect the estate.
They could question staff.
They could scrutinize weapons, security arrangements, family structure, and his own parenting.
Moretti men had spent generations preventing exactly that kind of access.
One capo told him privately, “Handle your wife inside the family.”
Raffaele removed the man from all household duties that afternoon.
By evening, word spread.
The boss was letting outsiders investigate his home.
Some called it weakness.
Raffaele looked at Lily sleeping in clean pajamas and did not care.
A child-protection investigator arrived the next morning.
Vanessa left the estate on her attorney’s advice.
A civil order prohibited unsupervised contact with Lily.

For the first time, the house belonged entirely to the child who had been kneeling on its terrace three days earlier.
But somewhere in Milwaukee, Mason still had not told anyone what he believed was his worst secret.
