Chapter 11

The seven names Thomas protected were contacted carefully.
Not all wanted acknowledgment.
Two were dead.
One family requested the record remain private.
Another wanted their children to know.
One man, Peter Hale, came to see me.
Seventy-eight.
Thomas had helped him leave Sterling at twenty.
Why?
Peter refused to take over his father’s crew.
My grandfather called him coward.
Thomas gave him money and a train ticket.
Peter became a teacher.
Forty years.
No regret.
He looked at me.
“Your grandfather would have hated my life.”
“Probably.”
He smiled.
“Good.”
Then:
“Thomas wasn’t a saint.”
“I know.”
“He liked deciding things for people.”
There it was again.
Even the man Thomas saved understood the flaw.
“He helped me because I wanted out.”
Peter leaned closer.
“But other times he decided people needed saving before they asked.”
Control in noble clothing.
That was the lesson.
Malcolm had inherited heroism without humility.
Vanessa inherited secrecy without context.
My father inherited authority and eventually learned regret.
Catherine inherited everyone’s mess and tried to document it.
And Bruno—
May you like
Bruno just bit the man who kicked at him.
Simple creature.
