Chapter 5

The Harrington file was not in my office.

Malcolm did not know that.

Good.

My father moved it years ago to a private library cabinet.

I opened it.

Inside were thirty-seven names.

Families.

Businesses.

Widows.

Retired associates.

Then:

CRANE, THOMAS.

Malcolm’s father.

I sat down.

Beside the name:

$480,000 support.

Emergency relocation.

Medical care for spouse.

Education for son.

I stared.

Malcolm had grown up believing my father destroyed his family.

The file suggested the opposite.

Then I found a second note.

Thomas Crane removed from security council after unauthorized surveillance of three Sterling captains.

There.

Conflict.

Thomas had been loyal.

Then controlling.

He monitored people without approval because he believed information prevented betrayal.

My father stopped him.

Thomas interpreted removal as humiliation.

Old story.

He later told Malcolm he had been discarded after saving Sterling.

Partly true.

Incomplete.

The file continued.

My father offered Thomas retirement money.

Thomas refused publicly.

Accepted privately through Harrington support.

Pride preserved.

Family protected.

Then one final note:

Thomas asked that Malcolm never know the payments came from Sterling.

I leaned back.

Of course.

A father preserved his dignity by hiding help.

A son inherited only resentment.

I showed Vanessa.

She read silently.

Then whispered:

“Malcolm thinks your father stole something from Thomas.”

“What?”

She finally answered.

“A list.”

“What list?”

“People Thomas protected inside Sterling.”

My chest tightened.

Not money.

People.

Malcolm believed the Harrington file named secret informants his father had cultivated.

If true, the list could expose old loyalties and embarrass families.

But the Harrington file contained no such thing.

So either Malcolm misunderstood—

or another document existed.

Vanessa looked toward the door.

“He said Catherine found it.”

I went still.

My wife.

Again.

“What did he mean?”

She whispered:

“He said your wife died knowing where the real list was.”

Not because her death was suspicious.

May you like

Because she had found something before illness took her.

Now I needed to know what.
