Chapter 14

Bruno declined slowly.
Old age.
No mystery.
No poison.
No enemy.
Just time.
I hated that more than I expected.
He stopped climbing stairs.
Then stopped caring about guests.
Then preferred the kitchen tile because it was cool.
Elena slept beside him one night.
I found her there.
“Bed exists.”
“So does floor.”
Fair.
Bruno died at fifteen.
Quietly.
My hand on his head.
Elena beside me.
I buried him beneath the oak near the greenhouse.
Not because he exposed Malcolm.
Because he had been Catherine’s dog.
Then mine.
Then simply Bruno.
His life deserved more than becoming a plot device in family history.
Elena placed his old blue collar beside the grave.
I almost stopped her.
Then didn’t.
The key had already been removed.
May you like
No secret left.
Just fabric.
