Chapter 13

Owen started visiting the estate occasionally after school.

Not because I adopted some sentimental uncle role.

Because Roselle worked there and childcare sometimes failed.

We built a small staff family room in the renovated guesthouse.

Not only for her.

For everyone.

Homework table.

Sofa.

Small refrigerator.

No locked exterior door.

The brass key became unnecessary.

Modern lock.

Roselle kept the old key anyway.

One afternoon Owen found it in her bag.

“Does this still open it?”

“No.”

He smiled.

“Then it’s useless.”

Roselle laughed.

I heard about it later and thought the boy was wiser than all of us.

Objects hold power only while systems keep accepting them.

The key had once represented Violetta’s control.

Now it opened nothing.

Perfect.
