Chapter 5

Violetta admitted everything by midnight.

At first.

Not later.

That mattered.

She had targeted me.

Not to kill me.

Not steal from me.

To get close enough to Ashcombe history that people would stop closing doors.

Her father died with the Harrow name still treated as contaminated.

She grew up hearing one sentence from her mother:

“Your father died a traitor because Ashcombe needed one.”

When she was twenty-eight, she began investigating socially.

Old dinners.

Retired captains.

Widows.

Household staff.

That led to Silas.

Then me.

She arranged our first meeting through a charity board.

“Did you intend to marry me?”

“No.”

The answer hurt.

“When did that change?”

“After six months.”

Maybe true.

I believed she loved me.

That did not make the beginning less calculated.

“What did you want when you first came?”

“Access.”

There.

“To Father’s room?”

“Eventually.”

“And after we became engaged?”

Her eyes filled.

“I thought I could find the truth before the wedding.”

“Without telling me.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because if you chose Ashcombe over me, I lost everything.”

I looked at her.

“You decided my answer before asking.”

Silence.

Then:

“I couldn’t risk it.”

No.

She could.

She chose not to.

“What made you take Owen?”

Violetta broke then.

Silas refused to open the room.

Roselle happened to be cleaning the private corridor.

Violetta overheard her talking to Owen’s school about late pickup.

A working mother.

Child dependent.

Obvious leverage.

She claimed she intended to keep him only an hour.

Silas resisted longer.

One hour became overnight.

Then another threat.

Then the engagement reception.

Cruelty rarely begins by announcing its final size.

It grows through repeated permission.

Violetta whispered:

“I was so close.”

I looked at her.

“And that made everyone else smaller.”

May you like

She closed her eyes.

Exactly.
