Chapter 5

Alessandra ordered a complete review of Gavin’s financial access.
Not his personal bank account.
Every hotel account, family expense card, vendor authorization and property transfer he had touched since the marriage.
Gavin laughed when she told him.
His confidence had returned.
“You're auditing your husband now?”
Alessandra watched him from across the hotel office.
“No.”
Her voice remained quiet.
“I’m auditing a man who used my credentials.”
His smile faded.
The first irregularity appeared before midnight.
A luxury apartment in Tribeca had been leased through a hospitality subsidiary.
The tenant:
Vanessa Cole.
Monthly rent:
$18,500.
Paid for thirty-one months.
The second irregularity was a private-school account.
Lucas Cole.
Tuition paid through an executive family-benefit program belonging to the Ashford hotel group.
Alessandra’s fingers rested motionless on the documents.
Gavin had been supporting Vanessa and Lucas with Ashford resources for years.
Sybil knew.
Her signatures appeared on two reimbursement approvals.
Alessandra summoned her.
Sybil arrived wearing the same pearls from the gala.
Even at midnight, she looked composed.
Alessandra placed the records down.
“You helped him.”
Sybil looked at the pages.
Then at Alessandra.
“Yes.”
No apology.
No hesitation.
“Why?”
Sybil’s mouth tightened.
“Because Lucas is Gavin’s son.”
“So is Tobin.”
Sybil’s eyes hardened.
“Tobin is yours.”
The sentence remained between them.
Alessandra’s breathing slowed.
“Explain that.”
Sybil folded her hands.
“You control everything. The hotels. The council. Security. The money. Even Gavin’s schedule.”
Alessandra’s gaze sharpened.
“You resent me.”
“I resent what my son became beside you.”
There it was.
The motive.
Sybil had not simply preferred Vanessa.
She believed Alessandra’s power had diminished Gavin.
Then Sybil added:
“He was supposed to become your equal.”
Alessandra looked toward the financial records.
Instead, he had lived on her authority while building another family behind her back.
Sybil stood.
“You still don't understand what tonight was supposed to do.”
Alessandra’s eyes lifted.
May you like
“What was tonight supposed to do?”
For the first time, Sybil looked unsure whether she had said too much.
