Chapter 1

The bright, cinematic lighting of the Plaza Hotel’s exterior washed over the bustling entrance, entirely devoid of any dull yellow tint. The brilliant white beams illuminated the vibrant red of the carpet and the crisp, starched black-and-white service uniforms of the hotel staff. Alexander Sterling stood just off to the side of the main valet station, adjusting the cuffs of his tailored formal suit. At thirty-two years old, he was as handsome as a movie star, possessing a sharp, angular face and a high-bridged nose. His fair, rosy skin caught the pristine, natural light as he checked his luxury wristwatch. The heavy gold timepiece ticked softly, a stark contrast to the thumping bass of the live orchestra playing inside the ballroom.

"Mr. Sterling, the board of directors has already taken their seats at the primary tables," a hotel manager said, stepping forward. The man’s crisp American accent cut through the hum of the arriving gala guests, all of whom were dressed in flawless black-tie evening attire.

"I am aware, Thomas," Alexander replied, his voice a low, commanding baritone. "Tell them I will be inside in exactly three minutes. I just need a moment of quiet before the circus begins."

"Certainly, sir. Take your time," the manager said, offering a polite bow before retreating toward the heavy glass doors.

Alexander exhaled a long breath, running a hand through his dark, thick hair. He stepped away from the glittering entrance, seeking the relative solitude of the hotel’s rear service alley. The lighting here was still incredibly bright, casting sharp, distinct shadows against the brick walls. He reached into his pocket to retrieve his phone, intending to make his nightly call to his mother’s estate, but a sudden, frantic rustling sound broke the stillness of the evening.

Alexander paused, his sharp eyes narrowing as he turned toward a row of large, green industrial trash bins.

"Hey," Alexander called out, his American accent firm and authoritative. "The kitchen staff shouldn't be dumping this late. Who is back there?"

The rustling stopped instantly. A tiny, fragile figure slowly backed out from behind the heavy metal bin. Alexander’s breath caught painfully in his throat, and the heavy luxury watch felt like a lead weight on his wrist.

Standing in the bright, unforgiving light was a little girl. She had fair, rosy skin that was currently smeared with dark, greasy soot. She was barefoot, her small toes curling against the cold, damp pavement. The child was drowning in a faded, filthy party dress that hung off her malnourished frame like a tragic ghost.

"What are you doing back here?" Alexander asked, his voice softening dramatically.

The little girl slowly turned around. In her trembling, dirt-stained hand, she was clutching a discarded chicken bone with a terrifying, desperate strength. As the bright light hit her face, Alexander’s heart plummeted into his stomach. The big, familiar blue eyes, the slope of her nose, the curve of her jaw—it was unmistakable.

He dropped to his knees on the concrete, entirely disregarding his expensive formal trousers.

"Sophia?" Alexander breathed, the world around him tilting dangerously.

The four-year-old girl froze. Her eyes widened with a desperate, disbelieving hope as she stared at the handsome man in the tailored suit.

"Daddy?" Sophia whispered, her voice cracking violently through a heartbreaking mixture of raw hunger and absolute fear.
