Chapter 8

The bright, natural lighting of the ballroom seemed to intensify, casting a stark, hyper-realistic glow over the standoff. The live orchestra remained silent. The white American guests held their breath, sensing that the dramatic confrontation was about to take a dark, irreversible turn.
Sophia’s small, fragile body was trembling so violently that Alexander had to adjust his grip to hold her steady. The four-year-old girl raised her dirty, soot-stained arm. With a terrifying, absolute certainty, she pointed her small index finger directly at Victoria.
Victoria, who had just grabbed a fresh crystal champagne flute from a terrified passing waiter to steady her nerves, stared back at the child.
"What is the filthy little brat pointing at?" Victoria hissed, trying to project arrogance, but her hand was shaking.
The champagne glass slipped from Victoria’s trembling fingers. It hit the marble floor and shattered into a hundred glittering pieces, the expensive liquid splashing across her ruined heels.
Alexander followed his daughter’s pointing finger, his eyes locking onto his mother's pale, terrified face. He then looked back at Sophia.
"Sophia, talk to me," Alexander urged gently, though his heart was pounding against his ribs like a trapped bird. "What is it?"
Sophia swallowed hard. Her tiny voice, when she finally spoke, was reduced to a fragile, terrified whisper, yet it echoed with devastating clarity through the utterly silent room.
"Dad..." Sophia shook, her blue eyes wide with the trauma of a memory she had been forced to bury in the dark. "Grandma is the one who... killed Mom."
The words dropped into the center of the ballroom like a detonating bomb.
Several women in the crowd gasped out loud. A hotel staff member dropped a silver serving tray. The clatter was deafening, but no one moved.
Alexander’s face turned completely stunned. The handsome, movie-star features went slack as his brain desperately tried to process the catastrophic weight of his four-year-old daughter's accusation. Elena’s death had broken him. It had driven him into a deep depression, causing him to bury himself in his corporate empire and foolishly trust his mother with his most precious possession.
"What did you say?" Alexander breathed, his voice barely audible.
May you like
"She pushed her, Daddy," Sophia whimpered, burying her face back into his neck, crying softly. "Mommy was crying. Grandma yelled at her. And then Grandma pushed her down the big stairs. She told me if I ever told you, she would put me in the trash forever."
The stunned disbelief on Alexander’s face evaporated in a fraction of a second. The deep, agonizing sorrow was entirely consumed by an absolute, apocalyptic fury. The monster inside the billionaire woke up, demanding blood.
