Chapter 9

The vibrant, cinematic colors of the grand ballroom felt like a grotesque mockery of the dark, horrifying truth that had just been exposed. The fair, rosy skin of the assembled guests turned a uniform, sickly pale. They were no longer witnessing a family argument; they were standing in the middle of a murder investigation.

"She is lying!" Victoria shrieked, her voice cracking into a high-pitched, hysterical wail. She scrambled backward, her heels crunching on the shattered crystal of her champagne glass. "The child is insane! She is hallucinating from hunger! She doesn't know what she is saying! She was only a baby when Elena died!"

Alexander slowly lowered Sophia from his shoulder, gently setting the four-year-old girl down on her bare feet upon the plush carpet. He knelt in front of her, entirely ignoring the chaotic screaming of his mother.

"Sophia, look at me," Alexander said softly, his voice a steady, grounding anchor.

Sophia sniffled and looked up into her father's eyes.

"Did you see her do it?" Alexander asked, his tone gentle but firm, searching for the absolute truth.

"Yes, Daddy," Sophia nodded, tears cutting fresh paths through the soot on her cheeks. "I was hiding behind the big vase. Grandma pushed her hard. Mommy fell all the way down. Then Grandma saw me and grabbed my arm. She said it was a secret."

Alexander closed his eyes. A single, ragged breath escaped his lips. When he opened his eyes again, the cold, sharp, intimidating stare of the furious patriarch was fully locked in.

He stood up to his full height. He looked at Victoria.

"Alexander, you cannot possibly believe the ramblings of a traumatized toddler over your own mother!" Victoria begged, backing away until she hit the edge of a buffet table. "It was an accident! The police report confirmed it!"

"The police report," Alexander said, his voice dropping into a lethal, quiet register, "was paid for by the Sterling family fortune. The fortune you have been controlling while I was grieving."

He took a slow, deliberate step toward her. The terrifying, controlled restraint in his posture made him infinitely more dangerous than a man shouting wildly.

"You murdered my wife," Alexander stated, the words carrying the absolute, final weight of a judge passing a death sentence. "Because she wanted to take me away from the business. You murdered her, and then you spent the next three years torturing my daughter to ensure her silence."

"I did it for the family!" Victoria finally screamed, her denial cracking under the overwhelming pressure, her psychotic justification spilling out in a panicked rush. "She was going to ruin everything we built! She was soft! You needed a hard lesson to become the man you are today!"

The confession hung in the bright, vividly lit air. The guests stared in absolute, unadulterated horror. The matriarch of the Sterling empire had just publicly confessed to the assassination of her own daughter-in-law.
