Chapter 4

The silence in the ballroom was so profound that the soft, residual sniffling of the little girl echoed clearly across the marble and carpet. Alexander stood completely still, his sharp, intimidating eyes locked onto his mother with a cold, murderous intensity.

Victoria Sterling, a woman who had spent seventy years mastering the art of manipulation and high-society politics, realized the optical disaster unfolding before her. She quickly plastered a brittle, plastic smile onto her face. Handing the silver cake knife to a nearby waiter, she began to advance across the ballroom floor. Her high heels clicked sharply against the tiles, a staccato rhythm of impending conflict.

"Alexander, darling," Victoria called out, her American accent pitched perfectly to sound like a concerned, loving mother. "What on earth are you doing? Where did you find that... creature?"

As Victoria approached, Sophia let out a terrified, breathless whimper. The four-year-old girl violently recoiled, pressing her dirty face deep into Alexander’s chest, hiding her eyes from the elegant woman in the emerald gown.

Alexander did not step back. He tightened his protective grip on his daughter, turning his body slightly to shield her from his mother's reaching hands. He glared down at Victoria, the muscles in his jaw ticking furiously.

"Don't you dare touch her," Alexander warned, his voice low and vibrating with raw, unfiltered menace.

Victoria’s brittle smile faltered. The panic she had tried to bury deep beneath her ribs surged upward, twisting her expression into one of vicious, arrogant contempt. She dropped the loving mother act, her true, sharp, and controlling nature bleeding into her voice.

"Put her down, Alexander," Victoria commanded, gesturing sharply toward the service doors. "This is the charity event of the season. We have senators and board members in this room. That child does not belong here. Hand her over to the staff immediately so they can dispose of her."

"Dispose of her?" Alexander repeated, the words tasting like ash in his mouth. "She is my daughter, Victoria. She is your own blood."

"She is a filthy embarrassment!" Victoria hissed, stepping closer, lowering her voice so the guests couldn't hear the full extent of her venom. "Look at her! She looks like a stray dog! You are ruining the Sterling name by parading her in front of these people! Give her to the maids right now!"

"You left a four-year-old girl in an alleyway," Alexander stated, his voice devoid of all warmth, completely detached from the woman who had raised him.

"I was trying to protect our reputation!" Victoria argued, her rosy cheeks flushing with indignation. "She was acting out! She refused to wear the dress I picked for her! She needs discipline, Alexander, and clearly, you are too weak to provide it!"

Alexander stared at the pearl necklace resting against her throat. The sheer, psychopathic audacity of her justification severed the final, fraying tether of his self-control.
