Chapter 10

Mara and Nerelle became friends.

Not instantly.

Not because shared illness creates automatic sisterhood.

They argued first.

Mara felt guilty.

Nerelle resented that.

“I don’t want your guilt.”

Mara answered:

“I don’t want your permission.”

Good start.

Eventually they found other things.

Bad hospital coffee.

Mystery novels.

Both hated lavender soap.

Human connection arrived after diagnosis stopped being the only subject.

Celestine met Nerelle later.

Her choice.

She asked me not to attend.

Also good.

Nerelle told me afterward that Celestine apologized for benefiting unknowingly.

Nerelle said:

“You didn’t take it.”

Celestine replied:

“I still benefited.”

Nerelle answered:

“Then do something useful with feeling bad.”

Apparently illness made everyone in my circle more direct.

Celestine did.

She joined the charity board only after treatment stabilized.

Not as authority.

As patient representative.

One vote.

No donor privilege.

She hated that.

Good.

At the first meeting she argued staff should have transportation vouchers available without diagnostic disclosure to event organizers.

Excellent.

Then complained the coffee was weak.

Balance.

Sibella was not invited onto the board.

Important.

Reform is not restoration.

She could change elsewhere.

The organization did not owe her a stage for redemption.

That distinction angered several people who believed remorse should produce reinstatement.

No.

Some doors remain closed even after people improve.

May you like

That is not cruelty.

It is structure remembering what happened.
