Chapter 15

Celestine’s cancer entered remission.

Careful word.

Not cured.

Not guaranteed.

Stable enough to breathe.

At the small dinner she hosted, she invited Nerelle.

Nerelle declined.

No offense.

She had plans.

I loved that.

Sick women do not owe ceremonial closure to everyone connected to their treatment.

Mara came.

Board members.

Family.

Sibella attended.

I did too.

At one point Celestine raised a glass.

Everyone tensed.

Speech.

She said:

“I am not thanking anyone for saving me.”

Excellent start.

Then:

“I’m thanking people who finally learned to ask me what I wanted.”

Sibella cried.

Celestine ignored her lovingly.

Then she said Nerelle’s name.

Not as martyr.

Not as person whose care paid for hers.

Simply:

“She deserved the same choice.”

That was enough.

No portrait.

No fundraising ask.

No tragic music.

Dinner continued.

I realized how much our world confuses gratitude with debt.

A recipient thanks.

Then becomes example.

Then becomes face.

Then becomes obligation.

No.

Help should end with more freedom, not a new role.

That became one of the charity’s guiding principles.

Not written on walls.

Just practiced.
