Chapter 16

Three years after the fundraiser, Nerelle returned to the ballroom.

Not as staff.

Not as patient representative.

As the person repairing a nineteenth-century dress for a museum benefit hosted there.

She carried a garment case.

Short hair now.

No wig.

Not statement.

Just preference.

I greeted her.

“You look well.”

“Careful.”

I smiled.

“How do you want me to say it?”

“You look older.”

“Leave.”

She laughed.

Good.

Her health remained stable.

Regular monitoring.

Life moved.

She opened the garment case.

Beautiful green silk.

“What happened?”

“Wine.”

I stared.

She did too.

Then both of us remembered.

Sibella.

The trolley.

The wig.

The fundraiser portrait.

Nerelle laughed first.

“Rich people should stop drinking near fabric.”

That was all.

Memory without ownership.

Later Sibella arrived as a guest.

They saw each other.

Nerelle nodded.

Sibella nodded back.

No forced conversation.

That was maturity too.

Across the room, Celestine complained about chairs.

Mara stole desserts into her handbag.

The charity director argued with a donor.

Alive people doing ordinary annoying things.

Far better than symbols.
