Chapter 12

My relationship with charity changed.

I had loved writing large checks.

Clean.

Decisive.

Money leaves.

Problem shrinks.

People thank you.

Powerful men enjoy forms of generosity that preserve distance.

Now the board made me sit through recipient meetings twice a year.

I hated them.

Useful.

One father said transportation support mattered more than medicine some months because he could not miss another shift.

A woman said childcare was the difference between attending treatment and canceling.

Another patient said she wanted no inspirational profile.

Just grocery assistance.

Different needs.

No universal story.

Nerelle attended once.

She spoke last.

“Ask people what would make the week easier.”

Simple.

Not what would save your life.

Not what story will move donors.

What makes the week easier?

That changed the fund more than any keynote speech.

Smaller grants became easier.

Privacy became normal.

Donors received impact totals without being handed individual suffering as entertainment.

Some complained.

One wealthy man said:

“People give when they connect to a face.”

I answered:

“Then connect to the fact they’re people.”

He donated less that year.

Fine.

Another donated more.

Also fine.

The fund became smaller.

Cleaner.

I preferred it.

For the first time, generosity stopped feeling like a performance I could purchase.

It became responsibility with limits.

May you like

Less glamorous.

More useful.
