Chapter 12

Julian earned his capo position back slowly.
Not because time passed.
Because behavior changed.
He worked under another captain.
No authority over recruits.
No youth events.
No family discipline.
He hated every limitation.
Accepted them anyway.
One day I saw him stop an older associate from mocking a young runner who looked frightened before a difficult meeting.
Nothing heroic.
Just:
“Leave the kid alone.”
The associate laughed.
Julian did not.
That mattered.
Later I asked:
“Why?”
He shrugged.
“He was scared.”
“That used to annoy you.”
“Yes.”
“And now?”
“It still does.”
Honest.
Then:
“But apparently that’s my problem.”
Progress.
Elliot eventually agreed to see him.
Six months after the garden.
Julian sat on the ground because standing over him felt wrong.
He apologized.
Specific.
“I chained your ankle.”
Elliot stared.
“I called you an animal.”
More.
“I heard your monitor and didn’t help.”
More.
“I was wrong.”
Elliot asked:
“Why?”
Julian looked at me.
I stayed silent.
His answer.
“Because people did bad things to me when I was little, and I started thinking that meant I was supposed to do them too.”
Elliot frowned.
“That dumb.”
Julian laughed once.
“Yes.”
Then Elliot asked:
“Can you fix trellis?”
Of course.
The broken garden trellis had never been replaced.
Julian nodded.
“Yes.”
That became their first shared activity.
Not forgiveness ritual.
Carpentry.
The new trellis stood straighter than the old one.
Elliot did not care.
He hung toy airplanes from it.
Julian complained.
Good.

Ordinary relationship beginning carefully.
That was more meaningful than any dramatic reunion.
