Chapter 7

Vivienne had known.

Not about the chain.

About hardening.

I learned from her old friend, Claire.

She showed me a message Vivienne sent three years earlier.

AGATHA KEEPS SAYING ELLIOT NEEDS TO “LEARN DISCOMFORT.” I DON’T LIKE IT.

I had never seen it.

Why?

Vivienne did not send it to me.

She sent it to Claire.

That hurt.

“Why didn’t she tell me?”

Claire gave me the answer I deserved.

“She did.”

I stared.

“When?”

At dinner.

A week after Elliot turned one.

Vivienne told me Agatha kept waking him early because “Bellafonte children should not control the household with sleep.”

I remembered the conversation.

I laughed.

Said:

“That’s Agatha.”

Three words.

Dismissal packaged as familiarity.

Vivienne stopped trying that night.

Not forever.

Later she told me Agatha criticized how often we held Elliot.

I said my aunt was old-fashioned.

Again.

Translated harm into personality.

Claire looked at me.

“She thought you would always explain Agatha instead of stopping her.”

That landed harder than any punch I had thrown at Julian.

I had protected my aunt’s intentions from my wife’s discomfort.

Not consciously.

Still.

Vivienne died before Elliot was old enough for the harsher sessions.

Afterward, Agatha entered the gap.

Helped with childcare.

Comforted me.

Told me she would keep the boy strong.

I heard devotion.

She meant methodology.

That did not make Vivienne secretly prophetic.

No grand hidden warning.

Just a woman whose smaller concerns I failed to value enough.

I visited her grave.

Alone.

No dramatic apology to stone.

She could not hear me.

Instead I said one sentence because I needed to hear it.

“You were right to dislike it.”

Then I went home.

Changed something.

Agatha no longer had automatic family access because of age.

Every relative followed the same childcare boundaries.

No discipline by anyone except the parent or designated caregiver.

Food, water, medication never used as leverage.

Nothing revolutionary.

Apparently our family needed revolution for obvious things.

Rafe called it the Vivienne Rule.

I told him not to.

May you like

It stuck anyway.

Families are unbearable.
