Chapter 5

Julian supervised three sessions.

He admitted it eventually.

Not proudly anymore.

First time: Elliot had refused to finish dinner.

Julian made him stand in the pantry for twenty minutes.

Second: Elliot cried during a thunderstorm.

Agatha told Julian to keep him outside the nursery until he stopped.

Third: garden.

Today.

The chain had been Agatha’s idea.

Julian attached it.

“Why?”

He looked at the floor.

“Because he kept trying to run toward the house.”

Four years old.

Trying to escape.

So the adult made escape impossible.

I looked at my cousin.

“Did you hear the monitor?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you stop?”

His face tightened.

“Mother said it always alarms.”

There.

The altered threshold had done more than make Elliot look medically fragile.

It taught everyone around him that the alarm was meaningless.

Cry wolf, but with a machine.

Agatha turned a safety signal into background noise.

That was the most dangerous part.

If Elliot ever had a genuine cardiac event, people conditioned to dismiss the sound might hesitate.

Helen said exactly that.

Agatha finally looked shaken.

Not by the cruelty.

By the consequence she had not considered.

“I would know the difference.”

Helen stared at her.

“How?”

Agatha had no answer.

Medical confidence built entirely from familiarity.

I removed Mercer from Elliot’s care.

Not from medicine.

That decision belonged to his clinic.

But no Bellafonte patient under my authority would be treated by him again until independent review.

He accepted without argument.

Julian asked:

“What happens to me?”

I looked at him.

“Today?”

“Yes.”

“You go home.”

He almost laughed.

“That’s it?”

“No.”

I continued.

“You lose all contact with Elliot unless I approve it.”

His face fell.

Good.

“You lose training authority over any family child.”

More.

“And your capo position is suspended until I understand whether you can distinguish leadership from obedience.”

That one hurt.

He stared at Agatha.

Old instinct.

Look to Mother.

She would tell him what to feel.

I noticed.

“So did he.”

Julian’s eyes returned to me.

“Don’t look at her.”

He stiffened.

May you like

“This answer belongs to you.”

For the first time all day, my cousin looked frightened.
