Chapter 9

Agatha did not change.

Not quickly.

She called my rules humiliation.

Said I turned family matters into accusations.

Said Vivienne would have raised Elliot soft.

I listened once.

Then stopped.

Understanding is not endless access.

She moved to her own wing of the estate.

Separate meals.

No unsupervised child contact.

She had money.

Staff.

Comfort.

Not exile.

Boundary.

Her greatest punishment was irrelevance.

She could no longer decide what happened around Elliot.

That enraged her.

One afternoon she confronted Nella—no, we have no Nella here. Different story. Keep cast limited. She confronted Elliot’s nanny, Grace, in the corridor.

“Tell Conrad the boy is being spoiled.”

Grace answered:

“Tell him yourself.”

Then walked away.

Agatha was stunned.

Staff had always carried elder messages downward.

Not anymore.

I heard about it from Rafe and laughed.

Small changes reveal power better than speeches.

Then Agatha tried a different strategy.

She hosted lunch for several older relatives.

No secret coup.

Just complaining.

They told me afterward.

Good.

Some agreed with her.

One uncle said:

“Kids today are fragile.”

I asked:

“Would you chain your grandson outside with a heart monitor sounding?”

He looked uncomfortable.

“No.”

Then we had found the line.

People often defend “old-fashioned discipline” abstractly.

Specificity ruins nostalgia.

Agatha’s support shrank when stories became concrete.

No one wanted to defend pouring water into grass beside a thirsty four-year-old.

She called that emotional manipulation.

I called it description.

Months passed.

Her anger cooled into something quieter.

Not regret yet.

Loss.

She had built her identity around being the family matriarch who made strong men.

If I rejected her methods, what did that make the sacrifices she imposed on Julian?

Meaningless?

That was the fear.

People cling to harmful traditions partly because admitting harm forces them to reinterpret their own lives.

I understood.

I did not rescue her from it.

That work belonged to her.
