Chapter 13

Marcus and Ramona’s father, Vincent Carbone, had been forced out of the family business twelve years earlier.
Officially for mismanagement.
Unofficially, everyone believed Lorenzo simply did not trust him.
Marcus had spent years describing it as humiliation.
Ramona described it as exile.
Now Marcus claimed the truth was worse.
“Dad found your hidden losses.”
Lorenzo’s eyes narrowed.
“What hidden losses?”
“Construction debt.”
Marcus leaned forward.
“You moved losses into another company and blamed him.”
Ramona looked at Lorenzo.
Even she had not heard this version.
Lorenzo did not answer immediately.
That hesitation gave Marcus power.
For three seconds.
Then Lorenzo opened his jacket and removed a small key.
He placed it on the table.
“Archive room.”
Anthony looked confused.
Lorenzo continued.
“Third cabinet. Blue file.”
Twenty minutes later, the original records arrived.
Vincent had not discovered hidden losses.
He had created them.
He guaranteed reckless property deals using family operating cash without authorization.
When the market turned, he hid the exposure.
Lorenzo uncovered it.
He removed Vincent quietly rather than expose him publicly because Ramona was twenty-eight and Marcus thirty-one.
He believed he was protecting them from their father’s disgrace.
Ramona read the records.
Her breathing became uneven.
“Why didn't you tell us?”
Lorenzo’s eyes softened slightly.
“Because he was your father.”
Marcus laughed bitterly.
“And instead you let us believe you destroyed him for power.”
Lorenzo looked at him.
“Yes.”
That single answer carried twelve years of consequences.
Ramona’s resentment had grown inside a lie created by Lorenzo’s silence.
It did not excuse what she became.
But it explained where the wound began.
Alina looked at her husband.
“You protected them with silence.”
Lorenzo met her eyes.
“And the silence poisoned them.”
He finally understood.
Then Anthony entered with another archive envelope.
“This was attached to Vincent’s file.”
Inside was a handwritten letter.
From Vincent.
Addressed to Ramona.
Never delivered.
Marcus reached for it.
Ramona got there first.
Her hands shook as she opened it.
