Chapter 23

Lucy read Vincent’s letter when she was fifteen.

Not because it was addressed to her.

Because family history class assigned a project about one event that changed a family.

Lucy chose:

The Support Fund.

Lorenzo almost objected.

Alina said:

“No.”

He frowned.

“I didn't say anything.”

“You were about to.”

Correct.

The archive held copies of Vincent’s records.

His hidden debt.

The property guarantees.

The letter to Ramona.

Access required approval because living family members were discussed.

Ramona agreed.

Marcus did not.

The archivist explained that the portions involving Vincent and Lorenzo could still be reviewed under the family-history rules without Marcus’s personal materials.

Good.

Boundaries.

Lucy sat at a reading table.

No private archive key from Lorenzo.

No hidden cabinet.

Professional staff.

She read the first line.

If Lorenzo removes me, do not avenge me. I earned it.

Then she looked at her father.

“Why didn't Ramona get this?”

Lorenzo answered.

“Because I never delivered it.”

“Why?”

“I thought protecting her from her father’s disgrace was kinder.”

Lucy frowned.

“Did she ask?”

“No.”

There it was.

Again.

“So you decided.”

“Yes.”

“And then she thought you destroyed him.”

“Yes.”

“Did you know?”

“Eventually.”

“Why not tell then?”

Pride.

Fear.

The family had already split.

He did not want to reopen Vincent’s shame.

All true.

“I kept believing silence was still protecting them.”

Lucy looked at him.

“Even when hurting.”

“Yes.”

She read more.

Vincent explicitly admitted the reckless deals.

Admitted hiding losses.

Admitted Lorenzo had been right to remove him.

At the end:

Do not turn my failure into another man’s crime.

Lucy became quiet.

Then:

“Uncle Marcus didn't read?”

“No.”

“Why?”

Ramona, sitting at the far end of the room by invitation, answered.

“He didn’t want to.”

Lucy looked toward her.

“Because then he wrong?”

Ramona took time.

“Because then some of his anger would have had to change.”

That was more accurate.

Lucy thought.

“Did yours?”

“Yes.”

“When you read?”

“Some.”

“Not all?”

“No.”

Ramona looked toward Lorenzo.

“I was still angry he kept it from me.”

Fair.

Lucy turned to him.

“Were you wrong?”

“Yes.”

Then toward Ramona.

“Were you wrong?”

“Yes.”

“Different wrong.”

Both adults answered:

“Yes.”

Lucy almost laughed.

Her project became less dramatic than classmates expected.

No mafia revenge.

No secret treasure.

Her thesis was:

A family can create conflict by hiding shame, even when the hiding is meant as protection.

Lorenzo read it.

Then read it again.

“You make me sound controlling.”

Lucy looked at him.

“Were you?”

Alina laughed from the kitchen.

Lorenzo stared at both of them.

No one rescued him.

Good.

Lucy received an A.

Ramona asked for a copy.

Lucy said no.

That mattered too.
