Chapter 14

Ramona read the entire letter alone.

When she returned, something in her had changed.

Not softened.

Collapsed.

Vincent admitted everything.

The reckless deals.

The hidden debt.

Lorenzo’s attempt to keep the humiliation private.

He specifically warned his children not to turn his failure into a family war.

Marcus refused to read it.

Ramona placed it in front of him.

“Read.”

“No.”

Her eyes narrowed.

“Read it.”

He pushed the paper away.

That was the moment she understood.

Marcus did not need the truth.

He needed the grievance.

Without it, too many choices became his own.

Ramona sat back.

Her hands rested in her lap.

For the first time since the luncheon, she looked tired instead of arrogant.

Marcus turned toward Lorenzo.

“You think this clears you?”

“No.”

Lorenzo’s voice was calm.

“I should have told you.”

Marcus scoffed.

Lorenzo continued.

“But I didn't put my hands on Alina.”

He looked at Ramona.

“I didn't plan to use Lucy.”

Then at Marcus.

“I didn't forge my wife’s signature.”

Marcus’s face hardened.

The difference was now unavoidable.

Lorenzo’s old mistake had helped create resentment.

Marcus and Ramona had chosen what to do with it.

The council voted.

Marcus was removed from all operational authority immediately.

His access to Carbone businesses, accounts and properties was suspended pending independent review.

Ramona resigned from the donor foundation before the vote reached her.

She did not ask for protection.

Derek lost his security position and agreed to cooperate with the financial review.

The shadow fund was frozen temporarily—but Alina insisted legitimate medical and widow support continue under independent administration.

That surprised Ramona.

“You're keeping it?”

Alina looked at her.

“The help.”

A pause.

“Not the control.”

Ramona lowered her eyes.

Then Claire approached Lorenzo with one final file.

The two million dollars still had not been fully accounted for.

She placed the transaction trail in front of him.

The final destination was not one of Ramona’s businesses.

Not Marcus’s.

Not Derek’s.

Lorenzo read the account name.

His face changed.

May you like

Alina leaned closer.

The missing money had been transferred into a trust bearing Lucy’s name.
