Chapter 1

“A little lesson?… I’ve got a little lesson for you too.”

Celeste went pale.

Victor did not.

That bothered me more.

He pushed foam supports away from his legs and stood slowly beside the overturned bonsai trolley, dignity apparently more injured than his body.

“You’re emotional.”

My son had just disappeared beneath dark water.

I was still dripping onto the conservatory floor.

“Yes.”

My voice remained quiet.

“I am.”

Two bodyguards had Owen wrapped in towels beside the orchid wall.

He watched Victor.

Not Celeste.

Victor.

There.

I walked to him.

Crouched.

“Owen.”

His little hands immediately reached for me.

I took him back.

“Has Aunt Celeste put you near the pond before?”

He nodded.

Victor said:

“Valentina.”

I raised one hand.

He stopped.

“What did she do?”

Owen pressed his cheek against mine.

“She make me practice.”

My eyes moved to Celeste.

“Practice what?”

“Brave.”

One word.

The conservatory seemed to shrink around me.

“How?”

He pointed toward the greenhouse corridor.

“Dark room.”

Celeste whispered:

“He’s three.”

Exactly.

Children are imprecise.

Fear usually isn’t.

“What dark room?”

Owen pointed again.

“The one with Mr. Harlan.”

Everything inside me stopped.

Victor finally looked away.

That name had not been spoken inside a Morello property in twenty-seven years.

Harlan Pike.

My father’s old security instructor.

The man who believed children born into powerful families should learn fear before they learned comfort.

The man who locked me inside dark wine cellars at six.

Left me alone in the woods at eight.

Held my head beneath swimming-pool water at nine until I stopped fighting blindly and learned to count seconds.

My father called it preparation.

Victor called it necessary.

When I took control of the family, Harlan was the first man I banned from every Morello property.

I looked at my uncle.

“You brought him back.”

Victor straightened his suit.

“Owen needs preparation.”

“He is three.”

“He is Morello.”

Wrong answer.

I held my son tighter.

Then Owen whispered:

“Mr. Harlan says Mommy got brave too.”

Celeste closed her eyes.

There it was.

They had not invented a new lesson for my child.

They had resurrected my childhood.
