Chapter 14

Victor and I took longer.

He eventually admitted something I had never heard.

When I was nine and Harlan held me underwater, Victor watched.

I knew.

What I did not know was that he argued with my father afterward.

Only once.

Said Harlan had gone too far.

My father replied:

“Then Valentina will learn where too far is.”

Victor never challenged him again.

Why?

Because my father mocked him for softness.

There.

The inheritance.

Victor spent the rest of his life proving he was not soft.

Even after my father died.

Even after I became boss.

Even when the person paying the price was Owen.

“You were still arguing with a dead man.”

I said it quietly.

Victor stared.

Then nodded.

That was his tragedy.

Not justification.

He had taken one humiliation from his brother and built decades of identity around avoiding it.

He mistook cruelty for independence while remaining completely controlled by a dead man’s opinion.

I understood that too well.

Then he said:

“I thought if Owen was soft, people would blame you.”

They did.

Some.

“So you hurt him first?”

His face collapsed.

When phrased plainly, tradition loses elegance.

“I thought I was preventing worse.”

Common belief.

Dangerous.

I asked:

“Would you do it again?”

“No.”

“Because I removed your authority?”

“No.”

Then:

“Because when he asked if I would, I realized he was afraid of my answer.”

Good.

That was change.

Not enough to restore everything.

Enough to begin.
