Chapter 16

I eventually returned donor relations to neither Celeste nor Victor.
A woman named Helena Ward took the role.
Not family.
Competent.
Kind without being weak.
Victor complained exactly once.
“Outsider.”
I looked at him.
“So was every Morello before marrying another Morello.”
He stopped.
Good.
Celeste built her own career away from my authority.
Event strategy for hotels.
No family title.
No inherited audience.
Healthy.
She became known for treating staff well.
Was that performance?
Maybe initially.
Behavior can become character through repetition.
I watched from distance.
Owen saw her occasionally.
Always supervised until he stopped needing supervision.
That took years.
No deadline.
Harlan Pike died quietly five years after the pond.
Victor attended the funeral.
I did not.
I felt no triumph.
No grief.
Just closure.
Before his death, Harlan sent one letter.
I almost burned it.
Read it instead.
Short.
He apologized for confusing obedience with courage.
Then wrote:
Fear can make a child still. Adults often call stillness discipline because it is convenient.
I kept that sentence.
Not the letter.
The letter I destroyed.
One useful truth did not require turning its author into a saint.
I repeated the sentence once at a captains’ dinner when a man bragged his six-year-old never cried.
The room became uncomfortable.
May you like
Good.
Some family traditions deserve discomfort before extinction.
