Chapter 8

Celeste denied threatening separation for thirty seconds.

Then stopped.

“She wouldn’t tell you anything.”

Victor looked at her.

“You said what?”

Interesting.

He had not authorized that part.

Again, systems mutate under people trying to impress the person above them.

Celeste defended herself.

“He kept saying Mommy.”

“So?”

“I needed him to focus.”

Victor’s disgust appeared.

Too late to make him righteous.

I turned toward him.

“You taught her results mattered more than method.”

His face hardened.

“She went too far.”

“That phrase belongs to cowards.”

Silence.

He had used Harlan for the same defense when I was nine.

I remembered.

After the swimming exercise, I vomited from swallowed water and fear.

My father got angry.

Victor said:

“Harlan went too far.”

Then Harlan stayed another eleven years.

Nobody changed the system.

They simply blamed excess.

I looked at Victor.

“You don’t get to condemn the distance after building the road.”

That landed.

Celeste asked:

“What happens to me?”

I almost hated the question.

As though punishment were the center.

It wasn’t.

Owen was.

Still, consequences mattered.

She lost donor relations permanently.

Every Morello event privilege suspended.

No unsupervised contact with Owen.

No family residence access without invitation.

Not exile from existence.

Removal from positions she had used to hurt someone.

Victor laughed bitterly.

“You’re grounding a grown woman.”

“No.”

“I’m closing doors she proved unsafe to walk through.”

Then him.

Former senior adviser.

Still respected by men who remembered my father.

That respect gave him influence without title.

I ended it.

No private counsel.

No instruction to staff.

No authority over Owen.

No role shaping family events.

“You cannot erase me.”

“I’m not.”

I looked at him.

“You’re my uncle.”

A pause.

“That is the only role you keep automatically.”

He stared.

Too small for him.

There was the problem.

Family had never been enough.

He needed family plus power.

Uncle plus adviser.

Love plus obedience.

When one layer disappeared, he experienced it as rejection.

I had seen that psychology before.

May you like

In myself.

Difference was what we chose afterward.
