Chapter 15

Lucian returned to a Caradonna dinner four years later.

As guest.

Not associate.

That distinction mattered.

His fragrance company with Valeria had become respectable.

Not huge.

Profitable.

They employed twelve people.

He looked healthier without family ambition chewing his face.

I told him so.

He replied:

“You look older.”

We were even.

During dinner he asked:

“Ever regret letting me walk?”

“No.”

“Liar.”

Maybe a little.

He had been competent.

But keeping someone because their departure inconveniences you is not loyalty.

It is possession with good catering.

Valeria did not attend.

Her choice.

Then Lucian told me:

“She almost sold the company.”

“Why?”

Exhaustion.

Success created pressure.

Investors wanted scale.

She did not want another structure where independence turned into obligation.

So she stayed smaller.

Interesting.

Maybe she finally learned growth can be chosen, not demanded.

Lucian looked around the table.

“You changed too.”

“How?”

“People leave.”

I laughed.

Apparently.

Two capos had retired.

One manager moved to California.

Helena sold me part of her studio partnership and kept the rest independent.

The old Caradonna house would have interpreted every departure as insult.

Now we asked:

Do they owe something?

Are they betraying confidence?

No?

Then go.

Some returned later.

Some did not.

The family became slightly smaller.

Stronger where voluntary.

Margaret called it “modern nonsense.”

Then encouraged three people to quit jobs they hated.

May you like

Hypocrite.

Healthy.
