Chapter 6

Luca arrived ninety minutes later.

He brought the Orison vial.

Smart.

Not enough.

Rafe searched him at the door.

No drama.

No weapons conversation.

This was about something else.

I placed the bottle containing Margaret No. 3 in front of him.

His face barely changed.

Barely.

Enough.

“Explain.”

He looked at Valeria.

She stood.

“You said you never touched anything except Orison.”

Luca’s silence hurt her more than mine.

Good.

Then he admitted it.

Months earlier, while visiting the atelier after hours with Valeria, he photographed several formula cards.

Not full recipes.

Accords.

Ingredient ratios.

Material sources.

He told himself everyone borrowed inspiration.

Luxury fragrance lives on reference.

Fair.

But he also stole two small concentrate samples.

Margaret No. 3.

And an old discontinued base called Autumn Glass.

Why?

Insurance.

Against Valeria choosing me over him.

There it was.

Not commerce.

Leverage.

If their planned fragrance house collapsed, Luca still possessed enough Caradonna material to create embarrassment.

Maybe profit.

Maybe bargaining power.

Valeria stared as though he had struck her.

“You used me.”

He answered:

“You used me too.”

Silence.

True.

She needed financing and independence.

He wanted access and her.

Neither relationship had been clean.

Lucian swore at him.

Luca ignored it.

I asked:

“Who else has the photographs?”

“Only me.”

“Copies?”

“No.”

“Do I believe you?”

“No.”

At least we agreed.

Then Valeria asked him:

“Were you ever actually going to launch my house?”

Luca looked at her.

“Yes.”

No hesitation.

Again, feelings real.

Methods rotten.

She laughed bitterly.

“Wonderful.”

Then she removed a small key from her evening bag.

Placed it on the table.

“What is that?”

I asked.

Luca answered before her.

“My private formulation room.”

Interesting.

She had access to his house too.

Equal betrayal.

Valeria looked at me.

“He gave me everything you wouldn’t.”

Luca flinched.

That sentence insulted him in a different way.

Everything?

No.

Access.

Not trust.

Because he secretly copied around her too.

I understood then.

Valeria believed she had escaped my permission structure.

Instead she entered another man’s structure where access was generous because extraction was happening quietly.

Freedom that depends on someone hiding what they take from you is not freedom.

She understood at the same moment.

Her face changed.

The engagement was already dead.

Now the affair was dying beside it.
