Chapter 8

I ended the engagement before midnight.

No delay.

No public announcement.

Valeria removed the ring herself.

Her hand shook.

“I knew.”

“Yes.”

She placed it beside the scent blotters.

I looked at it.

Then at her.

“Do you want the bottles?”

She blinked.

“Which?”

“Your collection.”

She stared.

“You’re giving them back?”

“They’re yours.”

Helena cleared her throat.

“Mostly.”

Fair.

Any formula materially using Caradonna private accords needed reworking.

Not legal argument.

Ethical.

Valeria nodded.

“I’ll reformulate.”

Good.

Then she asked:

“Do you hate me?”

“No.”

Same hard answer.

Her eyes filled.

“I love you.”

“I know.”

Luca looked away.

Interesting.

I continued.

“But I won’t marry someone who built an escape route through my house while telling me we were building one future.”

She cried quietly.

“I didn’t know how to be myself here.”

That deserved hearing.

“I believe you.”

“And?”

“And you still chose deception.”

Both.

She looked at the bottles.

“Would you have helped me launch this?”

I thought.

Before tonight?

Probably eventually.

After delays.

After conditions.

After making it feel like a favor.

Not good enough.

“I should have taken the idea seriously when you first said it.”

Her face tightened.

“But I didn’t owe you Caradonna formulas.”

She nodded.

Correct.

Then she asked about Luca.

Not my problem.

But she wanted to know if I planned retaliation.

“No.”

Surprise.

“He returns what he took.”

“He stays away from private Caradonna property.”

“Our families renegotiate boundaries.”

“No spectacle.”

Luca looked skeptical.

“You trust me?”

“No.”

I looked at him.

“I trust consequences more when they match the problem.”

He had stolen access.

He lost access.

He had copied formulas.

Those formulas would be rendered useless by changing materials and production.

He had kissed my fiancée.

That consequence belonged primarily to my relationship.

Mafia men love turning humiliation into war.

I had no interest in giving one kiss the power to bury ten other families.

Valeria looked at me.

“You really won’t go after him?”

“No.”

Then:

“That doesn’t mean I forgive either of you.”

May you like

She understood.

Some endings do not need bodies to be final.
