Chapter 9

Lucian expected to lose everything.

He did not.

Not immediately.

I removed him from Caradonna launch operations.

No atelier access.

No family strategy meetings.

No private transport details.

Then I asked one question.

“Why did you help?”

“My sister.”

Too easy.

“Try again.”

He stared.

Then:

“Because I’m tired of being your associate.”

There.

Good.

Lucian had worked near Caradonna eight years.

Competent.

Ambitious.

Always introduced as Valeria’s brother once our relationship became serious.

Before that, simply Knox.

He hated it.

Luca offered him a role in the new fragrance house.

Not capo.

Not lieutenant.

Operations partner.

Something his.

Again.

Identity.

“Why not leave openly?”

Lucian laughed.

“You think men can just walk out of your orbit?”

I almost answered yes.

Then remembered the way people behaved around me.

Maybe not.

“I would have let you.”

“Would you?”

Fair.

I considered.

“Yes.”

He studied me.

Then nodded slowly.

Maybe he believed me.

Maybe not.

Still, none of that explained attacking me for the photograph.

“I panicked.”

He said.

Again.

“Because if you saw Luca, the whole plan died before launch.”

Yes.

He had not lunged out of loyalty to Valeria alone.

He lunged to protect his future too.

Specific.

Better.

I told him:

“You want independence?”

“Yes.”

“Take it.”

He looked surprised.

“No Caradonna salary.”

“No Caradonna title.”

“No Caradonna protection for whatever you build.”

His face changed.

Freedom costs.

That was the part everyone likes less.

He nodded.

“I accept.”

Good.

He left the family business the next week.

Not banished.

Not humiliated.

He joined Valeria’s fragrance project after she separated from Luca.

Interesting.

Sibling bond survived.

May you like

Maybe because this time they built something without hiding inside my house.

I respected that more than I expected.
