Chapter 1

The ballroom remained completely silent.

Loose sheet music drifted across the carpet.

Garrett lay against the overturned orchestra rack, one hand pressed against his mouth.

Evelyn sat among collapsed auction boxes and ribboned packages, staring at Alessia as though she still could not understand how quickly the room had stopped belonging to her.

Alessia did not look at either of them first.

She crossed to Miriam.

Her mother was sitting on the carpet with Lily wrapped around her shoulders.

Miriam’s cardigan had twisted beneath one arm.

One low heel had come off.

Her breathing was uneven.

Alessia crouched.

“Can you stand?”

Miriam nodded.

Too quickly.

Alessia saw pain flash across her face when she tried.

“Don't.”

A physician attending the gala was called over immediately.

Lily climbed into Alessia’s arms.

Her small fingers tightened around the lapel of Alessia’s black jacket.

“Mommy…”

Alessia’s voice softened.

“I’m here.”

Behind them Garrett pushed himself upright.

“Alessia.”

She did not turn.

That frightened him.

“Alessia, listen to me.”

Still nothing.

The physician examined Miriam’s wrist.

Bruising was already forming.

No fracture apparent.

Her hip would need imaging.

Alessia’s eyes remained on her mother’s face.

“What happened before I came through those doors?”

Miriam looked toward Garrett.

Alessia saw it.

Not fear exactly.

Reluctance.

That bothered her more.

Garrett stepped forward.

“Your mother started this.”

Alessia finally turned.

The capos behind her shifted only slightly.

Garrett stopped walking.

His breathing grew slower.

Controlled.

“She came into a private conversation and accused my mother of stealing.”

Evelyn stood carefully.

“That woman has been trying to destroy our family since the wedding.”

Miriam’s eyes hardened.

Alessia looked at her.

“Mom?”

Miriam pressed her lips together.

Lily suddenly twisted in Alessia’s arms.

“Grandma wouldn't give Daddy the blue book.”

Every adult stopped.

Garrett’s face changed.

Only briefly.

Alessia caught it.

“What blue book?”

Miriam closed her eyes.

Garrett answered too quickly.

“A notebook. Nothing.”

Alessia looked at him.

His jaw tightened.

Lily pointed toward Miriam’s purse lying near the winter-garden doors.

“The one Daddy kicked.”

Alessia’s gaze moved to the purse.

Garrett moved half a step.

One capo stepped directly into his path.

No threat.

No touch.

Garrett stopped.

Alessia walked to the purse.

Inside were reading glasses.

A handkerchief.

Medication.

A small photograph of Lily.

And beneath everything—

a thin blue leather ledger.

Garrett’s breathing changed.

Evelyn looked away.

Alessia noticed both.

She opened it.

Names.

Dates.

Amounts.

Initials.

Hundreds of handwritten entries.

Some went back nearly four years.

At the top of one page:

CARBONE FAMILY RELIEF — EMERGENCY DISBURSEMENTS.

Alessia’s expression went completely still.

She had chaired the official Carbone Relief Foundation for six years.

She had never seen this ledger.

Then she turned the page.

Beside dozens of payments appeared the same initials.

G.L.

Garrett Lawson.

Alessia raised her eyes.

Her husband had not shoved Miriam because of an insult.

He had shoved her because she had brought evidence into the gala.
