Chapter 11

Garrett stared at his mother.
“You investigated my wife?”
Evelyn’s chin lifted.
“I protected you.”
His face hardened.
“From what?”
“From marrying a woman who could erase you.”
Silence.
Alessia remained still.
Garrett’s hands curled.
“You spent six hundred thousand dollars from Miriam’s fund.”
“I replaced it.”
“That's not what I asked.”
The anger in his voice sounded different now.
Not performance.
Betrayal.
Evelyn looked toward Alessia.
“For years I watched my son become an accessory to your name.”
Alessia's gaze remained steady.
“So you hired investigators.”
“Yes.”
“What were you looking for?”
“Anything.”
That answer landed heavily.
Affairs.
Hidden accounts.
Undisclosed medical information.
Internal opposition.
Anything that could give Garrett leverage if the marriage ever collapsed.
Garrett looked sick.
“You told me Alessia was keeping secrets.”
“She was.”
“Everyone keeps secrets.”
Evelyn snapped:
“You were disappearing inside her life.”
Garrett’s mouth tightened.
For a moment, Alessia saw the mother beneath the strategist.
A woman terrified that her son’s marriage had reduced him.
Then Alessia asked:
“What did they find?”
Evelyn looked away.
“Almost nothing.”
“Almost?”
One report involved Miriam.
She had met secretly with three former Carbone associates.
Evelyn assumed Miriam was organizing opposition to Alessia.
In reality, they were donors to the emergency fund.
Evelyn followed the trail.
That was how she discovered the blue ledger.
Then she realized what Garrett controlled.
Her son had a private network of gratitude sitting beneath Alessia’s organization.
Evelyn taught him how to use it.
Garrett’s voice became low.
“You made me think it was my idea.”
Evelyn looked at him.
“You were already angry.”
“I wasn't planning a vote.”
“Not yet.”
His breathing caught.
That word changed everything.
Evelyn had not invented Garrett’s resentment.
She cultivated it.
Fed it.
Gave it language.
Respect.
Authority.
Balance.
Until he could call revenge governance.
Miriam stared at Evelyn.
“You poisoned your own son.”
Evelyn’s eyes flashed.
“No.”
Her voice sharpened.
“I taught him not to disappear under your daughter.”
Garrett looked at her.
For the first time, disgust appeared alongside love.
Then the financial investigator interrupted.
The intelligence firm still existed.
And its archives contained one final unresolved report.
A sealed file Evelyn had ordered but never received.
Subject:
LILY CARBONE — PATERNITY / SUCCESSION EXPOSURE.
Alessia's expression turned completely still.
Garrett looked at his mother.
“What the hell is that?”
May you like
Evelyn went pale.
She had investigated whether Lily was really Garrett’s daughter.
