Chapter 13

The psychiatric document looked convincing.

A doctor’s name.

Letterhead.

Diagnostic language.

Recommendation for temporary executive leave.

Alessia read it without expression.

Garrett watched her.

“This wasn't mine.”

She looked up.

“I believe you.”

Evelyn said nothing.

Everyone turned.

Her shoulders remained straight.

But her hands had stopped moving.

Alessia asked:

“You?”

Evelyn exhaled.

“No.”

That surprised Garrett.

Then the investigator checked the metadata.

The document originated from Lawson Family Office.

But the author account belonged to Evelyn’s longtime attorney.

She frowned.

“I never asked him to create that.”

For once, her confusion appeared genuine.

The attorney was called.

He denied writing it.

His credentials had been used through an assistant account.

The assistant was located within an hour.

A thirty-two-year-old man named Daniel Kreese.

He had been paid.

Not by Evelyn.

By Garrett.

Everyone looked at him.

Garrett went white.

“No.”

The bank transfer was real.

His account.

His company.

His authorization.

He stared at the date.

Then his face changed.

“I know what that payment was.”

He looked toward Evelyn.

“You told me it was for governance counsel.”

She frowned.

“I never told you that.”

Garrett’s breathing stopped.

Another layer.

Someone had used both of them.

The payment instruction arrived through Garrett’s chief of staff.

A man named Colin Mercer.

Garrett’s closest professional adviser for seven years.

Colin had helped construct the governance challenge.

He had organized meetings with capos.

Prepared voting models.

Drafted trust language.

Garrett had trusted him completely.

Alessia looked at Garrett.

“Where is he?”

Garrett checked his phone.

No answer.

His jaw tightened.

They traced Colin’s gala access.

He had left twenty minutes before Alessia opened the winter-garden doors.

Before the confrontation.

Before the ledger was exposed.

Why leave before the plan succeeded?

The answer appeared in a transaction alert.

Colin had transferred $1.1 million from a Lawson-controlled strategy account into an offshore vehicle that afternoon.

Garrett stared.

“He stole from me.”

Evelyn’s eyes hardened.

Miriam whispered:

“And left all of you fighting.”

Alessia understood.

Colin did not create Garrett’s resentment.

He did not create Evelyn’s prejudice.

He did not create Miriam’s secrecy.

He had simply found a family filled with existing fractures and made money inside them.

Garrett looked at Alessia.

“This doesn't change what I did.”

“No.”

His eyes lowered.

She continued.

“But it changes who else answers for it.”

Then investigators recovered Colin’s last email.

Scheduled to send at midnight.

Recipient:

A national newspaper.

Attachments:

The fake psychiatric report.

The secret emergency fund.

Selected photographs from the gala.

And a prepared story alleging Alessia Carbone was mentally unstable, financially corrupt, and physically violent.

Colin planned to destroy her publicly after helping Garrett challenge her privately.
