Chapter 6

Miriam sat down.

The revelation seemed to take strength from her legs.

Evelyn did not look surprised.

Alessia saw that immediately.

“You knew.”

Evelyn’s lips curved slightly.

“Garrett discussed succession planning.”

“I am thirty-five.”

“You're reckless.”

Alessia’s face remained still.

Evelyn continued.

“You put family assets through compliance reviews. Shut down profitable relationships. Refused old favors. Insulted men who kept the Carbones strong long before you wore that ring.”

Miriam snapped:

“Those men served her father.”

Evelyn looked toward her.

“And your daughter has spent six years dismantling what he built.”

Alessia listened.

She had heard versions of the accusation before.

Usually behind closed doors.

Usually from older men.

Hearing it from her mother-in-law was almost refreshing.

“What was Garrett’s plan?”

Evelyn did not answer.

Garrett did.

“To force a governance review.”

His voice was steady now.

No shame.

“You weren't supposed to lose everything.”

Alessia laughed once.

Cold.

“How generous.”

Garrett’s jaw tightened.

“You were supposed to share authority.”

“With you.”

“With a board.”

“A board you bought.”

“Men I helped.”

Alessia's eyes sharpened.

“You still don't hear the difference.”

Garrett stepped closer.

Bodyguards shifted.

He stopped voluntarily.

“You think power is pure because you inherited yours.”

Her hand tightened.

“I inherited enemies.”

“And a name.”

“Yes.”

“At birth.”

“Yes.”

His breathing deepened.

“I married into a room where every man still called me Alessia’s husband after six years.”

There it was.

Not only money.

Identity.

Humiliation.

Garrett had been successful before her.

Wealthy.

Connected.

Respected.

Then marriage turned every achievement into proximity to Alessia Carbone.

He hated that.

Evelyn hated it more.

Her son became secondary to a woman whose mother she still considered socially beneath her.

Miriam looked at Garrett.

“So you planned to remove my daughter because people knew her name before yours?”

His eyes snapped toward her.

“No.”

“Then why shove me?”

His face hardened.

Because Miriam was carrying the blue ledger into the gala.

She had told Garrett that morning she intended to confess everything.

The secret fund.

Her original authorization.

The Lawson payments.

All of it.

Garrett panicked.

Not because one ledger alone could remove Alessia.

Because it could expose the loyalty network before the planned vote.

Alessia looked toward her mother.

“You were going to tell me tonight?”

Miriam nodded.

“After the charity presentation.”

“Why today?”

Miriam’s eyes moved toward Evelyn.

“Because yesterday she threatened Lily.”

Evelyn stood abruptly.

“That is a lie.”

Alessia’s face changed.

“What happened?”

Miriam’s fingers tightened.

“She told me if I exposed the ledger, Garrett would make sure Lily never inherited a voice in this family.”

Alessia stepped forward.

Garrett’s breathing stopped.

Evelyn lifted her chin.

“I said children inherit consequences.”

Miriam’s eyes flashed.

“You said Lily would learn her place.”

Alessia’s voice became almost inaudible.

“Did you threaten my daughter?”

Evelyn remained proud.

“I warned Miriam.”

Alessia stared at her.

Then Lily’s caregiver returned holding something.

“Ms. Carbone…”

Alessia turned.

Rosa carried Lily’s cardigan.

Inside one pocket was a folded note.

Miriam recognized the handwriting.

Evelyn’s.
